MBEF December 2023 Update
Greetings MBEF Members:
Baby, it’s cold outside. Yes, winter is in full force this holiday season, so it’s time to make sure your home or business is prepared. There are many local weatherization assistance opportunities available for Missourians that will provide grants and/or equipment to maximize energy efficiency and reduce your utility bills. Click the link here from Missouri’s Department of Natural Resources to find your local community partner.
Drought Conditions Remain
Though some parts of Missouri recently received some needed rain, much of the state is still experiencing abnormally dry or severely dry conditions. This continues to impact crop production and energy usage, stressing communities that depend on a certain amount of rainfall each year.
Fox 2 News’ Emily Manley reports that Missouri is experiencing a once-in-20-year drought. See her report here.
Ameren Missouri to close Missouri coal plant by 2030?
If the Missouri Public Service Commission allows, Ameren Missouri plans to close one of its oldest coal plants ahead of schedule. Thanks in part to a new securitization law, the investor-owned utility can re-finance the cost of decommissioning the plant at minimal cost to ratepayers while staying on target to incorporate their planned wind, solar, battery storage, and natural gas investments. The further transition to these sources will be gradual to protect Missouri’s energy consumers and workforce. Long-term investments in cleaner, homegrown energy sources will benefit all of us for generations.
2024, Looking Ahead
The Missouri General Assembly will convene in January for its annual legislative session. Several energy-related proposals will be brought forward. Senate Majority Leader Cindy O’Laughlin was recently quoted stating that she “expects energy regulation to be a ‘hot topic’ this session.” Issues addressing pricing plans, upgrades to transmission lines and energy infrastructure, solar taxation, and others are expected to be debated in the coming months.
Stay tuned for more updates in 2024. Until then, may all of you have a safe, warm, and healthy holiday season. Merry Christmas!
