Help Keep Missouri’s Rates Affordable
The U.S. Energy Information Administration recently published a report that lists Missouri as having the 7th lowest residential electricity rate in the U.S. As of February 2012, Missourians paid approximately 8.84 cents per kilowatt hour for their electricity each month. New York and Connecticut’s residents pay as much as 16.69 cents, almost double what Missouri residents pay.
Missourians are fortunate to live in a state with such affordable electric rates, especially in such a challenging economy. Our residential rates have had a positive impact our businesses and our economy.
Although we a benefit today from these affordable rates, our commitment to ensuring that rates remain affordable in the future must not waver. Today, 80% of Missouri’s electric power is produced through aging coal plants that could ultimately be shut down due to federal regulations and costly upgrades. Unless we invest in new energy sources, rates are likely to substantially rise.
It’s important to remember that the demand for electricity in Missouri is expected to increase by 25% in the next 20 years. With an increased demand and a depleted energy source, it is vital that we act today to make sure our rates continue to lead to the job-creation and economic growth our economy needs.
