This month we are celebrating our country’s independence, but today, we are focused on Missouri’s energy independence. Not only can we harness power from the sun and wind, Missouri farmers are taking advantage of federal subsidies to plant seeds and turn harvested crops into biofuels. Methane from landfills, algae and many other resources are also advancing as energy options for our state.

Thanks to A Few Large Industrial Corporations, Missourians Lose Out on Potential for Jobs and Billions in Economic Investment for our State

The most significant economic development bill debated in the state legislature this year had the support of the governor, lieutenant governor, large majorities of legislators in both the House and Senate, small and large businesses, economic development organizations, labor organizations, farmers, various trade groups and countless individual Missourians. The bill would have assured that Missouri had options for keeping electric rates low and meeting future demand for energy. And it would have led to the creation of thousands of good jobs at the same time.

Indiana Moves Toward Nuclear Power

Indiana’s legislature has taken a major step toward keeping electricity rates low in their state. Senate Bill 251, which allows energy utilities to recover certain costs for clean energy projects, including nuclear energy production or generation facilities, passed Indiana’s House by a vote of 62-34 and the Senate by a vote of 31-19. The bill now moves to Gov. Mitch Daniels for his signature.

Support House Bill 613 and Missouri’s Energy Future

Monday is an important day in the effort to secure Missouri’s clean energy future.

House Bill 613, House Renewable Energy Chairman Jason Holsman’s legislation clarifying the renewable energy standard passed originally in 2008, will be debated on the House floor. We expect that amendments will be offered to add the provisions of the nuclear site permit bill, including the robust consumer protections. The nuclear site permit bill language is important because it keeps open the option to build a second nuclear plant in our state, and doing so may be Missouri’s best bet for keeping electricity rates low in the future.

Who Should Pay More – Residential Consumers or Industry?

Do you think corporations should pay less for electricity than small businesses and residential customers? In Missouri, they do. Right now, many large industrial corporations pay virtually half the rate for electricity that small businesses and residential customers pay. And those companies want to keep it that way.
