Indiana Moves Toward Nuclear Power
Indiana’s legislature has taken a major step toward keeping electricity rates low in their state. Senate Bill 251, which allows energy utilities to recover certain costs for clean energy projects, including nuclear energy production or generation facilities, passed Indiana’s House by a vote of 62-34 and the Senate by a vote of 31-19. The bill now moves to Gov. Mitch Daniels for his signature.
Indiana’s legislators clearly have shown that they know keeping open the option for a new nuclear power plant is a move toward jobs, economic investment and affordable, clean energy. Unfortunately, for Missourians, as other states move forward to address their energy needs, large out-of-state corporations are delaying the process. If we continue to wait, we may be forced to purchase electricity from other states – like Indiana – at a higher rate in the future.
I hope Missouri’s legislators see this progress taking place in Indiana and act soon on behalf of our state’s nuclear site permit bill, and I hope you’ll continue to urge them to do the same.
