Support House Bill 613 and Missouri’s Energy Future

Monday is an important day in the effort to secure Missouri’s clean energy future.

House Bill 613, House Renewable Energy Chairman Jason Holsman’s legislation clarifying the renewable energy standard passed originally in 2008, will be debated on the House floor. We expect that amendments will be offered to add the provisions of the nuclear site permit bill, including the robust consumer protections. The nuclear site permit bill language is important because it keeps open the option to build a second nuclear plant in our state, and doing so may be Missouri’s best bet for keeping electricity rates low in the future.

Do you think corporations should pay less for electricity than small businesses and residential customers? In Missouri, they do. Right now, many large industrial corporations pay virtually half the rate for electricity that small businesses and residential customers pay. And those companies want to keep it that way.

Missouri needs reliable, affordable energy to encourage economic growth

According to a recent economic report, Missouri is one of six states in the nation that experienced significant job losses over the past year. While the national average unemployment rate continues to drop, now at 8.8%, Missouri’s rate remains drastically high at 9.4%. Even more unsettling is that the Missouri General Assembly’s session is rapidly coming to an end and not one piece of legislation has been passed that will create jobs in Missouri. This is sobering news for our state – and it reminds us that we must continue to act to get Missouri’s economy back on track.

Missourians Show Strong Support for Nuclear Power

Today, Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future (MBEF) released the results of a statewide survey conducted March 24 – 26, to gauge Missourians’ opinions about nuclear power. Our survey demonstrates strong public support for nuclear power, construction of a second nuclear power plant and keeping open the option of more nuclear power for the state. We Need Your Help!

Tomorrow, on Wednesday, March 9, the Missouri State Senate Veterans’ Affairs, Pensions and Urban Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on several versions of the Nuclear Site Permit Bill. Right before the hearing, we’ll hold a press conference with Sen. Mike Kehoe, Rep. Jeanie Riddle and the 20 Senate Co-sponsors, along with business and community leaders from across the state, to show support for the Nuclear Site Permit Bills.
