Indiana’s legislature has taken a major step toward keeping electricity rates low in their state. Senate Bill 251, which allows energy utilities to recover certain costs for clean energy projects, including nuclear energy production or generation facilities, passed Indiana’s House by a vote of 62-34 and the Senate by a vote of 31-19. The bill now moves to Gov. Mitch Daniels for his signature.

Monday is an important day in the effort to secure Missouri’s clean energy future.
House Bill 613, House Renewable Energy Chairman Jason Holsman’s legislation clarifying the renewable energy standard passed originally in 2008, will be debated on the House floor. We expect that amendments will be offered to add the provisions of the nuclear site permit bill, including the robust consumer protections. The nuclear site permit bill language is important because it keeps open the option to build a second nuclear plant in our state, and doing so may be Missouri’s best bet for keeping electricity rates low in the future.

Do you think corporations should pay less for electricity than small businesses and residential customers? In Missouri, they do. Right now, many large industrial corporations pay virtually half the rate for electricity that small businesses and residential customers pay. And those companies want to keep it that way.

According to a recent economic report, Missouri is one of six states in the nation that experienced significant job losses over the past year. While the national average unemployment rate continues to drop, now at 8.8%, Missouri’s rate remains drastically high at 9.4%. Even more unsettling is that the Missouri General Assembly’s session is rapidly coming to an end and not one piece of legislation has been passed that will create jobs in Missouri. This is sobering news for our state – and it reminds us that we must continue to act to get Missouri’s economy back on track.

Today, Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future (MBEF) released the results of a statewide survey conducted March 24 – 26, to gauge Missourians’ opinions about nuclear power. Our survey demonstrates strong public support for nuclear power, construction of a second nuclear power plant and keeping open the option of more nuclear power for the state. On Monday, our legislators will return to the Capitol for the final seven weeks of this year’s legislative session. As they set their priorities for rest of the session, we hope you will join us in continuing to urge them to consider Missouri’s energy future. Despite the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, a Fox News poll, conducted by Anderson Robbins Research/Shaw & Company Research on March 14 – 16, found that a majority of American voters continue to support the use of nuclear power in the U.S. And we at Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future, like you, remain convinced that nuclear power must remain an option for our state’s energy future.
