Support SMR Funding for Missouri

Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future (MBEF) continues to support Missouri’s partnership for U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The DOE announced an initial round of funding in the fall of 2012. Funding opportunities are still available, and MBEF will continue its efforts to make Missouri the clear choice.

Missouri faces an unprecedented economic opportunity. The DOE funding could be the first step in establishing Missouri as the global manufacturing hub for this new technology. What could this mean for Missourians? $37 billion a year, to be exact.

Our state stands to gain an industry with an annual economic impact as high as $37 billion a year, according to Dr. Geoffrey Black of Boise State University+. To put that in perspective, sales from SMRs would more than TRIPLE the combined sales from our state’s top agribusinesses – corn, soybeans, cattle and calves, poultry and eggs and hogs and pigs.

More than 13,000 jobs could be created from the manufacturing, construction, installation and operation of just one SMR unit in Missouri!
