US EPA Orders Dramatic Cuts in Pollution
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) – Power plants in Missouri and Illinois will have to reduce smokestack pollution under rules announced Thursday by federal regulators.
The rule targets sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from power plants in more than two dozen states. The US EnvironmentalProtection Agency says that pollution could be carried long distances into other states. The emissions have been linked to health issues, including asthma.
The new regulations go into effect next year are estimated to cost utilities $800-million a year.
An Ameren spokesperson tells KMOX the utility is assessing the impact of the new regulations but adds the company has already cut emissions significantly.
