RELEASE: *** PSC HEARING COUNTDOWN CLOCK: 7 DAYS *** Noranda PSC Request Shifts Up to $1 Billion to Other Electric Customers

With One Week Until the PSC Hears from Southeast Missouri, St. Louis, and Mid-Missouri, MBEF Reminds Electric Consumers Why Noranda’s Rate Shift is Bad for ALL of Missouri

Jefferson City, MO – With the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) set to hear from community members in Caruthersville, St. Louis, and Jefferson City on June 9th, 10th, and 11th respectively, Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future (MBEF) is sending daily reminders about why Missouri consumers should oppose Noranda Aluminum’s request to the PSC for an electric rate reduction.

In mid-February, Noranda Aluminum made a formal request to the PSC for a 25 percent electric rate reduction on top of a rate that’s already lower than any other Ameren Missouri resident or business by as much as 60 percent.

The reduction would be paid for through higher rates to other Ameren Missouri customers by as much as $500 million to a billion dollars over 10 years. Over 90 percent of Ameren Missouri customers live more than 100 miles from Noranda Aluminum’s New Madrid, MO smelter.

“If knowing Noranda’s request for lower rates means that we all pay more isn’t enough to oppose this rate shift, I don’t know what is. It’s not right that this company can simply claim economic distress and pass that distress onto other Missouri consumers,” MBEF Executive Director Irl Scissors said.
