PRESS RELEASE: MBEF: Strong Potential Continues for Energy and Jobs in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future (MBEF) today announced its support for Missouri’s partnership for the next phase of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The DOE announced an initial round of funding earlier today. MBEF continues to support the Westinghouse Electric Company’s partnership with Missouri’s investor-owned, cooperative and municipal utilities.

Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future Executive Director Irl L. Scissors released the following statement about the announcement.

“SMR funding will mark an important and positive step for Missouri and our energy future. I applaud Gov. Jay Nixon, Sen. Mike Kehoe, Rep. Jeanie Riddle, our state’s utility community and workforce, and the overwhelming majority of members of the General Assembly who are helping make this plan a reality for Missouri. It is promising to see the U.S. Department of Energy move forward; MBEF’s membership will stay actively engaged in this process as SMR investments continue to spawn economic development in the United States.

“MBEF’s supporters work hard across the state to educate the public to show that clean alternative sources of energy like nuclear are a path forward for Missouri. Today, we are another step closer to creating jobs, boosting our economy and securing our energy future.

“Now is the time to do all we can to ensure that Missouri is the best contender to gain these benefits. MBEF is prepared to work with our statewide membership during the 2013 legislative session to make energy a priority in our state. We must make necessary changes to strengthen Missouri’s utility infrastructure and regulatory framework so that we can compete for this funding.”
