Picnic kicks off Clayton’s green community challenge
Clayton’s Board of Alderman recently passed a resolution to embark on an EPA Green Power Community.
Leading municipalities across the nation are partnering with the EPA to become Green Power Communities (GPC.) GPCs are cities, in which the local government, businesses, and residents collectively buy green power.
The city of Clayton will hold a picnic to kick off its EPA Green Power Community (GPC) Challenge on Sunday, June 27, in Oak Knoll Park at Clayton Road and Big Bend Boulevard from 4 to 5 p.m.At 5, live music begins at Musical Nights in Oak Knoll Park.
The challenge focus is to encourage local businesses and residents to support new sources of renewable energy and reduce the city of Clayton’s carbon footprint.
Clayton’s EPA Green Power Community (GPC) Challenge reflects the city’s new and ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, to protect the environment and to increase community pride and community engagement in conservation initiatives. Based on EPA guidelines, Clayton’s challenge goal will be to make green power 2% of citywide energy consumption.
The challenge will be led by the city, AmerenUE Pure Power and Clayton-based Microgrid Energy. Together, these entities said they will work to enlist the support and use of clean energy by local businesses, residents and non-profits by encouraging the private consumption of renewable energy via the purchase of renewable energy credits (RECs) or the installation of onsite renewable energy.
At the kickoff picnic, guests will enjoy free BBQ and wind-powered crafts for the kids. They’ll also learn how they can help Clayton achieve this “first in Missouri” distinction.
