Missouri selected to receive $715,000 grant from U.S. Department of Energy
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri was one of 22 states selected to receive a competitive State Energy Program grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The awards are part of the Energy Department’s effort to reduce energy costs in homes and buildings, create jobs, and boost domestic manufacturing of energy-saving technology.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Energy, in partnership with Office of Administration’s Division of Facilities Management Design and Construction, will use approximately $715,000 over a three-year period to reinvigorate Missouri’s State Facilities Energy Conservation Program.
“This funding will enable us to work with OA to further Governor Jay Nixon’s call to reduce energy consumption in state-owned and operated buildings,” said Sara Parker Pauley, director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
In 2009, Governor Nixon signed Executive Order 09-18, which required state agencies to develop policies that will result in reductions of energy consumption by two percent per year over the next 10 years.
Activities funded by the grant will include assessing current practices and processes for selecting and retrofitting state government buildings for energy efficiency; identifying barriers to widespread adoption of building retrofits; developing strategies to resolve those barriers; implementing energy efficient strategies; and developing a comprehensive energy training and motivation program for both maintenance staff and state employees.
“Our goal for the State Facilities Energy Conservation Program is to achieve 20 percent or greater energy savings in at least half of state-owned and operated buildings,” said Llona Weiss, director of the Division of Energy.
