Missouri House of Representatives Shows Overwhelming Support for Nuclear Power

JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri House of Representatives took a major step toward additional nuclear power today, adopting an amendment, on a vote of 121 to 21, which would enable Missouri to seek a site permit for a second nuclear power plant in Callaway County. The amendment was added to Senate Bill 207, legislation that now awaits a final vote from the House of Representatives.

Below is a statement from Irl Scissors, executive director of Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future:

“Given the increasing federal regulation of our aging coal fired-power plants, a new nuclear power plant may be our best available strategy for keeping electric rates down and making sure we have a sufficient supply of clean and reliable energy. The site permit amendment allows Missouri to keep this option open. This amendment is important to everyone who cares about our state’s economic future.

“I applaud Chairman Darrell Pollock, Chairman Jason Holsman and Rep. Jeanie Riddle for their leadership on the energy issues affecting the future our state. And I’m confident that the vast majority of Missourians appreciate the overwhelming support this amendment received in the House today. I urge Speaker Steven Tilley to bring Senate Bill 207 to a successful vote in the House as soon as possible.”
