Statement from Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future Executive Director Irl Scissors on the nuclear site permit bill:

Following is a statement from Irl L. Scissors, executive director of Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future, on the nuclear site permit bill:

“Today marked the final chance this legislative session for the Missouri General Assembly to take action on the nuclear site permit bill – which would keep nuclear power as an option for our state’s energy future. Unfortunately, the bill did not receive a vote.

“We are greatly disappointed and frustrated this bill did not pass. It had the support of Gov. Jay Nixon, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and large bipartisan majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly –121 members of the House voted for the proposal, and 21 members of the Senate co-sponsored it.

“Yet despite this widespread support, a few big industrial corporations delayed the bill for most of the session. It took three months before a hearing was held, it was never voted on in a Senate committee and received very little discussion until the waning hours of the legislative session.

“It is critical that we address this issue, because electricity demand continues to increase, and we will not be able to rely as heavily on coal-fired power to meet our energy needs for the long term because of tougher regulations and rising costs associated with running those plants. In addition, nuclear power may be our best bet for keeping rates low in the future, and it would create jobs and boost our economy.

“We will continue to push Missouri’s leaders to adopt a solid plan for our state’s energy future.”
