MBEF: Legislature Must Act to Create Jobs in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY  As another day passes in the final week of the Missouri legislative session without a vote scheduled on the nuclear site permit bill, Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future (MBEF) released the below statement on the bill’s impact on jobs. To date, no legislation has passed out of the legislature that will put Missourians back to work.

“Missouri’s economy remains stalled,” said Irl Scissors, MBEF’s executive director. “Too many people in our state are without jobs. And yet putting our citizens back to work does not seem to be a priority.

“The nuclear site permit bill is the first, critical step toward thousands of jobs. The construction project is expected to put 3,000 Missourians to work – not to mention the thousands of additional indirect jobs. And the plant’s operations would provide 400 permanent jobs. This legislation is too promising for our state’s economic and energy future to ignore. We need these jobs – and action from the Senate and House leaders – now.

“If we don’t act soon, other states will. We’ve got to ensure that we get the jobs and economic investment. Most importantly, we need clean energy that keeps our rates low. This legislation is the only way to keep nuclear power an option for Missouri. We need the nuclear site permit bill.”
