Letter to the Editor: Outdated energy grid promises more cold days ahead
It seems everyday there’s news about a new wave of extreme weather then about a family struggling to pay heating bills or the skyrocketing propane prices. I feel for families faced with an outage or need to conserve energy to the point their houses are cold in the middle of these frigid temperatures. I know that utilities, like Ameren, offer ways to help — either to receive energy assistance or you can give a buck or two more a month on your energy bill and it goes to help more families in need.
But I worry that there will come a time when St. Louis families will be faced with cold homes during cold weather events and it won’t be because they can’t afford their bills. Rather it will be because we have an old energy grid that can’t support our heavy use anymore. If our legislators and utility companies can’t work together to bring that equipment up to date, we’re going to be praying for more than energy assistance to help our families stay warm.
