Legislature missed opportunity to upgrade electric system
Summer is upon us, and the 2013 legislative session has come to a close. I want to thank Sen. Mike Kehoe, R-Jefferson City, and Rep. Jeanie Riddle, R-Mokane, for all their work. These individuals introduced in the Senate and House, respectively, a very important bill: Infrastructure Strengthening and Regulatory Streamlining.
They worked very hard to build support for ISRS in both chambers. Although this important legislation did not pass, they helped spark an important statewide conversation regarding Missouri’s need for an upgraded electric system and regulatory design.
As a result of their actions, more electric customers understand the economic benefits of an improved system: more jobs now and in the future and the ability to attract new industry. We also understand the consequences that come with doing nothing, including the risks and costs associated with less reliable service, and continued interest costs that feed unpredictable rate spikes.
ISRS was an opportunity missed. A new year will be here soon, along with the beginning of a new legislative session. I encourage the legislative body to pass ISRS in 2014.
