B&W to Replace University of Missouri’s Coal-Fired Boiler with Biomass-Fueled Unit
BARBERTON, Ohio–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. (B&W PGG) has signed a contract to replace a coal-fired boiler on the University of Missouri campus with a biomass boiler that will generate steam and electricity from clean, renewable biomass fuel. B&W PGG is a subsidiary of The Babcock & Wilcox Company.
“Other colleges and universities are likely to take notice of the University of Missouri’s decision to convert its physical plant to utilize a renewable, environmentally friendly fuel and we are confident B&W PGG has the technology to meet their needs.”
B&W PGG will design, engineer and supply a 150,000 pound-per-hour bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler designed to burn chipped hardwoods and various local opportunity fuels near the university campus. The new boiler will be retrofit within the university physical plant’s existing structure. The physical plant provides the university campus with electricity and steam for heating and other uses.
“B&W PGG is pleased to be selected for this important, trend-setting project,” said B&W PGG President and Chief Operating Officer Richard L. Killion. “Other colleges and universities are likely to take notice of the University of Missouri’s decision to convert its physical plant to utilize a renewable, environmentally friendly fuel and we are confident B&W PGG has the technology to meet their needs.”
The university’s decision to use wood and wood waste as fuel also will result in lower sulfur dioxide emissions and less ash for disposal than a typical coal-fired plant. Engineering work is underway at B&W PGG’s Barberton, Ohio headquarters. Boiler delivery is scheduled for the summer, 2011.
