Bills would protect Missouri from uncertain energy prices

A recent letter claimed that the Missouri Energy Partnership Act, better known as Senate Bill 50/House Bill 124, is risky and unnecessary. The real risk would be dismissing this legislation. Missouri gets most of its power from aging coal plants that soon will need to be replaced or retired. At the same time, our energy demand is increasing rapidly. Without strategic long-term planning, we could face higher electricity rates.

For those reasons, SB 50/HB 124 has widespread bipartisan support across the state. This legislation keeps open the option of clean, reliable nuclear power in Missouri should our state decide nuclear power is the best strategy for meeting our future energy needs — and it will cost residential consumers less than $2 a year. This small investment would help keep energy costs low in the long term and has the potential to create thousands of jobs.

Today, Missouri is home to the 11th-lowest electricity rates in the nation. SB 50/HB 124 will help us keep it that way.
