Bill will bolster utility service, stabilize rates
Editor, the Tribune: The next couple of weeks will prove to be crucial for Missouri’s energy future as both the House and Senate will decide the fate of ISRS (Infrastructure Strengthening and Regulatory Streamlining). With that said, it’s important to emphasize the direct effect that this legislation will have on consumers here in our state.
The first things that come to mind are predictable and affordable rates. As it stands now, there is no telling when we are going to see a rate spike on our electric bill. While rates were stable (and occasionally decreased) over most of the past two decades, we’ve had a few increases over the past three years. Rate adjustments are unexpected, and we are often left wondering why. ISRS can change this. If passed, electric utilities will be able to quickly invest in infrastructure maintenance and make much-needed updates before problems arise, leaving our monthly electric bills consistent and predictable.
Second, consumers should be able to expect reliable service. We want to know that when we flip that switch, the power will come on without issue. ISRS will safeguard this reliability by letting servicers upgrade and improve substations, transmission lines, electric poles and wires.
I urge legislators who haven’t already shown support for ISRS legislation to put consumers top of mind when making this important decision. Affordable rates and reliable service are needed here in Missouri, and I’m confident that ISRS can help ensure these benefits for consumers like me.
