KMBZ: KCP&L opens a new solar facility in Greenwood, Missouri

GREENWOOD, Mo. – KCP&L going green with a new renewable energy facility. The solar farm, 30 miles southeast of Kansas City, will generate enough electricity to power 400 homes. KCP&L Spokeswoman Courtney Hughley says by the end of 2017, about 20% of their power generation capacity coming from renewable sources. She tells KMBZ this is a sort of test project, to find out what future applications exist for solar energy in the utility’s portfolio.

“From this we’ll be able to learn what future applications exist for KCP&L when it comes to solar power,” says Hughley.

Hughley says the solar farm also is bringing jobs. Sungevity, their partners in this project, moved here from California, adding about 250 jobs to Kansas City.

“For people that are familiar with the solar array that is out by Kauffman Stadium, this one is about 100 times larger than that one,” says Hughley. “It’s about 11,500 ground mounted solar panels. That’s enough to power more than 400 homes.”
