Kansas City Business Journal: KCP&L proposes solar farm in Jackson County

Kansas City Power & Light Co. has filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission to build a solar power generation facility in southeast Jackson County.

A release from the Public Service Commission said KCP&L Greater Missouri Operations Co. — part of Kansas City-based investor-owned utility Great Plains Energy Inc. (NYSE: GXP) — applied to build a facility near the city of Greenwood. The proposed plant would be capable of producing 4,700 megawatt-hours of energy annually, enough to serve about 440 homes. A release said the facility is planned to be completed by April.

KCP&L has filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission for approval to build a solar power generation facility near Greenwood.

The facility would be built on land the utility already owns on farmland just north of the Greenwood Energy Center, according to filings with the PSC. An estimated cost was redacted from the filing.

Although the amount of electricity generated by the facility isn’t huge, the project would provide two distinct benefits. The project would help the utility meet obligations for renewable energy resources. The company said in its filing that it also would allow it to “gain hands-on solar operation and maintenance skills.”
